The Ozone Chelan Open was created to offer a safe, fun, and supportive environment for learning and friendly competition in one of the best places on the planet to fly and race.
By limiting gliders to C-class or lower, the event allows newer competition pilots to flourish. The organization focuses on sharing knowledge and ensuring excellent flying conditions, providing a unique space where the next generation of competition and XC pilots can be mentored by some of the best in the field.
Matty Senior, the meet director, reports from this year's race:
‘The 2026 Ozone Chelan Open was another outstanding event, with four excellent tasks completed out of six scheduled days.
Pilots enjoyed a great variety of routes, including a long flight to Odessa, a task south to Quincy, the always popular goal in Leavenworth where pilots landed alongside the Clydesdale horses, and a final task back to the football fields in Chelan.
Performance at the top of the field was impressive, with nine of the top ten overall pilots flying Ozone.
It was also a pleasure to have Ozone test pilot and paragliding legend Russ Ogden return as one of our mentors. His experience, guidance, and willingness to share his knowledge were greatly appreciated by everyone at the event.
Most importantly, the competition concluded with an outstanding safety record, with all pilots returning home safely after a fantastic week of racing.’
The overall win went to Colin Rathbun, and in the women’s category, the winner was Summer Barham.
