Jimmy Huang (flying his EnZo) and Dean Stratton (flying his R11) have broken the California distance record, flying 270km along the Eastern Sierra and into Nevada through some truly wild terrain. The American West has massive potential for big XC flying, and although the Owens Valley has been a famous XC destination for several decades, the state distance record has now been broken three times already this month; first by Aaron Price, then by Dean Stratton, and a third time by Dean and Jimmy flying together for 270kms. Their route took them past 4000m peaks and high desert terrain that is famous for big air. They reported extreme turbulence at altitude and said that at times the air wasn't exactly fun, but overall it was an epic experience. The fact that this record took place in late September indicates much more distance potential for this mountain range. However, pilots experienced with flying in this area all report intense and difficult flying from start to finish on the most active thermal days.
