The Australian league 2017 just came to an end, Our friend, Che Golus, reports: "The Bright Open and Pre PWC wound up on the 20th January after 3 successful tasks. The first two tasks were definitely not classic Bright conditions with mostly blue skies, low altitudes and slow thermals. Jouni Makkonen of Finland took out the first task on his Enzo 2, followed by Felipe Rezende (Enzo 2) and Steve Nagle (Zeno). The second task was a fun ridge run up and down the Kiewa Valley from the Gundowring site, won by Ivan Anissimov (Enzo 2) with Youngjong Park (Enzo 2) of Korea coming in a couple of minutes later. The third successful task was more like a classic Bright race, with stronger climbs and good racing around the valley and up past Mount Buffalo. The task was won by Felipe Rezende (Enzo 2). The final results were Jouni Makkonen taking out first place for a third time in a row, Felipe Rezende in second and myself in third place. The top woman was Woo Young Jang flying a Zeno. I also won serial class on my Zeno. The top 10 places overall were taken out by Ozone pilots flying Enzo 2's or Zeno's. The top 6 serial class places were all pilots flying the Zeno. Straight after Bright we moved 2 hours to the north for the Corryong Open, with one practice/rest day in between. We had four successful tasks over the week of the competition. The first and second tasks were taken out by current Australian Champion Gareth Carter on his Zeno. The third task was a great 88km triangle with a tricky finish that saw a few pilots, including myself, end up just short of goal. Jouni Makkonen was the first one in goal and took out the day. The fourth task was classic Corryong racing conditions with clouds and a high base that unfortunately we couldn't touch due to airspace restrictions. Over 30 pilots completed the 52km task in under two hours with Brian Webb (Enzo 2) the fastest around in just 1hr 33min. Peter Slade (Enzo 2) took out the day with lead out points with Brian in second and myself in third place. Peter Slade's consistent flying meant he took out his first AAA Australian competition with Gareth Carter (Zeno) in second and Jouni Makkonen (Enzo 2) in third. The top woman was Kari Ellis. This comps concluded the Australian Championships for 2017 with Gareth Carter (Zeno) taking it out for a sixth time in a row!
