The FAI and USHPA sanctioned Rat Race (Part 1 of the US National Championship Series) event wrapped up this past Saturday in the US after 7 valid tasks with Eric Reed taking 1st and Josh Cohn 3rd, both on Enzo 2s. Seven of the top ten spots were flying Enzo 2s, and of note, 9th was taken by Owen Showmaker on his M6! The Women’s was swept by Ozone pilots with Bianca Heinrich in 1st, Lisa Dickenson in 2nd, and Julie Spiegler in 3rd, all on Delta 2s. The Sport Class podium was also swept by Ozone pilots, with Andrew Dahl on his Delta 2 winning 1st, Russell Croman on an Alpina 2 in 2nd place, and David Sacher on his Delta 2 in 3rd. Pilots reported great conditions with 7 straight flying days, the longest of which was an 82.6 km task.
Run simultaneously, the Rat Race Sprint is a serial class competition with shorter tasks meant to make competition fun and accessible as well as provide mentoring for new comp pilots. The Rat Race podium was also all Ozone pilots. Billy Purden took 1st on his Delta 2, with Greg Fackrell on a Delta 2 in 2nd, and Kent Wien on an Alpina 2 in 3rd
