First STOL-Classic Competition Takes Off in Florida

The first-ever STOL-Classic competition was held in Florida, USA, in early December. The event brought together around 30 pilots from the US, England, Italy, Venezuela, Argentina for an exciting new format that combined precision tasks with easy navigation.
This unique competition was initiated by Leah Catullo (Ozone Team Pilot) in collaboration with the Aviator PPG team. Leah Catullo, an FAI delegate and a member of the US National Team, is one of the few US pilots who regularly competes in international FAI Classic and Slalom events. For years, she has been advocating for FAI-format competitions to be introduced in the US.
The Aviator team played a pivotal role in organizing the STOL competition, drawing inspiration from similar plane competitions. In this format, precision tasks focus on achieving the shortest distances for takeoff and landing, creating a dynamic and challenging experience for participants.
The new format successfully attracted numerous pilots and sponsors.
US pilot Kyle claimed the top spot on the podium, while we are thrilled to see that second and third places were taken by female pilots Gillian and Whitney, both flying Ozone gliders.
Leah Catullo, Event Director, says: "This competition featured a new task, Paramotor STOL, which not only was a favorite among competitors due to the spector friendly feature, similar to accuracy tasks. As event director, I knew the responsibility I was accepting to deliver a safe and fair competition to pilots, but also create lasting memories to carry on and spread the spirit of this competition to pilots across America. In the end I was grateful for the competitors trust in me and my vision to travel as far from Italy, England, Canada & Brazil. In conclusion, fingers crossed, this is only the beginning of the future.”
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and participants, as well as a huge thank you to the organizing team (Leah Catullo, Ghada Baz, Neil Wight, Reese D’Aquin and others) for their dedication, hard work, and energy in making this event possible. A special thanks goes to the airfield owner (Sunniland Ranch Airport) for hosting this fantastic competition.
Together, you’ve created an unforgettable event!
