Days 8 & 9 - Sitting out the storms

We have had 3 storms in 3 days and are in the middle of the 3rd right now. We have recorded winds of 100km per hour, far too strong to kite in, but infuriatingly, as soon as the storm subsides, there is no wind whatsoever. We have really struggled to do any proper kiting therefore, and have only been able to cover very short distances so far.

Last night, we had our second false polar bear alarm. Not one single bit less, did it scare the life out of us, than the first time. Around 1.30am, another of the flares on the trip wires around our tent went off. All four of us woke up, yelling out loud (yes, we are happy to report that, this time, Dan actually woke up and displayed a requisite amount of fear), but to our relief, we found nothing again when we went outside to check. Charlie and Dan tried to go back to sleep, while Cynan and David got to work repairing the wires.

Tempers are a little frayed, as we all become increasingly frustrated with the cycle of bad weather and ensuing absence of wind, not to mention how cold we all are! Temperatures have dropped below -25°C and Dan has had frost-nip on his toes. Charlie has rushed to the rescue again, offering a different part of his body as assistance on this occasion though. This time it is the healing powers of his armpits that are working wonders; Dan`s feet have been snuggled there trying to warm up again.

Needless to say, we are now praying to both the storm and the wind gods to please start communicating properly with each other and get on and sort out the weather conditions for us and quickly!
