DAY 11

Life without wind

Hope is eternal, but so seems the current lack of wind, which is becoming a recurrent theme of the expedition. Today was the stillest day imaginable, which rather put pay to our planned day of kiting fun and play.

We are boys though and we can build things. Paul Frost, thank you for your suggestion of building an igloo; you must have read our minds! We spent today building a beautiful igloo for 4, complete with a stylish dining room table; very sophisticated. We are having dinner inside right now and will sleep in it tonight. Dan and Charlie did most of the work. David contributed, but then became distracted building his very own Celtic Ice Circle – we have Spitsbergen’s unique version of Stone Henge.

We need to reach a suitable point by Saturday, close to where we were first dropped off, from where Dan can be collected. We will head off in the morning therefore and kite as fast as possible. The wind is ‘supposed’ to blow tomorrow. We will be doing another wind dance tonight. The wind WILL blow tomorrow, it WILL.
